2025 in Review

There is always more to watch… We have brought you the biggest debates from the commission tables, the latest on local sports, and everything in between. Take a look back with us on the wonderful content we have aired in 2025 from your local producers.

Government Meetings

332

meetings

From the 25 different boards and commissions we air, we covered 332 meetings. And the hours added up…

Those meetings totaled up to be over 80 hours.

The longest meeting was a Burleigh County Commission meeting on September 15th, lasting 4 hours and 58 minutes. The shortest was the March 4th meeting of the Bismarck-Burleigh Joint Commissions. It wasn’t even 10 minutes long (9 minutes and 55 seconds).

80+

hours

37

Episodes of City Current

But who has time for that?

We were there to breakdown some of these meetings into what citizens need to know.

Alongside 37 episodes of City Current, Bismarck Insights also aired 22 episodes.

Big Items:

  • City of Bismarck and Burleigh County’s dispute over the Extra Territorial Area (ETA)
  • Mandan’s Memorial Highway Construction Project
  • Separation of Auditor/Treasurer position for Burleigh County

Community Programs

Miss a concert? Or want to see more local talent?

We wanted to get out into the community more this year and were happy to be there to capture 3 concerts from local groups, which were among the 8 concerts we were able to air on our Community Access channel.

8

music concerts

15

episodes of new programs

Education and arts were our focus for new programs. Along with our new regular programs, we were also able to record 3 special educational programs centered toward the interests of North Dakotans.

New producers, new partnerships!

In 2025, we started 2 new programs in our studio, produced by community members. Nodakian After Hours is a bi-weekly program with a late-night flair. In Tune with BMSO takes us behind-the-music with Dr. Beverly Everett and her guest musicians.

With these programs and several concerts, performances, guest speakers, and more, we were happy to create new partnerships and strengthen old ones with the Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra, Dakota Pro Musica, AARP North Dakota, ND Monitor and Dakota West Arts Council

We are looking forward to continuing our work with these partners in 2026, as well as develop new relationships to bring you relevant and reliable programming!

Holiday Hot Take! Weird opinion or tradition or superstition?

“My mom’s whole side of the family has done away with Christmas as a large group, and we instead celebrate the tradition of Festivus (Like from Seinfeld).

It is very similar in many ways, with the main difference being a Festivus pole in place of a Christmas tree, and one large white elephant gift exchange where everyone finishes with one gift, rather than the traditional exchange of gifts.”

How would you spend an ideal winter day?

When is too early to put up a tree/start listening to holiday music?

“December 14th”

Favorite holiday memory?

“The Christmas of 1976 our daughter Sammy’s first Christmas. And, again in 1979 when she was three. She was able to open her own gifts and was so excited with everything that was happening.

The Christmas of 1964 was also special. Cheryl and I met during the summer, and this was our first Christmas together. We celebrated it at my house with my parents, my sister, and her mother. I gave Cheryl a Gene Pitney album and Tabu perfume. “

Favorite holiday movie?

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) – I had a crush on Natalie Wood.

Elf (2003) Will Farrell was the best elf ever. “Buddy Elf. What’s your favorite color?” I like to answer the phone that way during December.”

How would you spend an ideal winter day?

“Skiing down a mountain in Montana.”

Holiday Hot Take! Weird opinion or tradition or superstition?

“We make peppernuts at Christmas. They are small spicy cookies; not nuts. If you make enough of them, they can last for weeks. The longer you keep them, the harder they get. Most people are afraid to eat them, but we love them.”

Quinn's Picks

When is too early to put up a tree/start listening to holiday music?

“December, 20th.”

Favorite holiday movie?

“One of my favorite films of all time, Billy’s Wilder’s The Apartment. If Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie, then so does this.

But 2021’s Spencer, about Princess Diana’s final holiday with the Royal Family, really captures the feeling of a stressful Christmas.”

You’re bringing a dish to our holiday party. What are you bringing?

“Cranberries. Never from a can. Always made with orange juice.”

Best present you have ever received?

“I got my first dog for Christmas when I was in 6th grade. My family tried very hard to convince me I did not have to give her a holiday themed name, but this was Holly.”

Holiday Hot Take!

My Favorite Things, the song from The Sound of Music, is not a holiday song. The song is sung during a thunderstorm. They don’t celebrate the holidays in the film.  There is no reason to be playing it at Christmastime and it has made me like that wonderful film a little bit less… I do love an excuse to listen to Julie Andrews though.”

Tammy's Picks

When is too early to put up a tree/start listening to holiday music?

“Before Halloween”

Favorite holiday movie?

Serendipity (always up for something magical) and Family Stone (a cozy, beautiful, messy, holiday dramedy) grab some tissues”

Favorite holiday memory?

“Candlelight service singing Silent Night with family, ice skating with sisters, and driving around looking at xmas lights, and Lefsa! lots and lots of Lefsa!!! :)”

Holiday Hot Take! Weird opinion or tradition or superstition?

“On Christmas night, you can always find some of my siblings and family locked in an endless game of Monopoly—an epic saga of scheming, dramatic sighs, questionable ‘banking,’ and uncontrollable laughter that drags on into the wee hours. I don’t always join the madness, but I happily soak in the chaos that echoes through my mother’s house!” 😄”

How would you spend an ideal winter day?

“Ice skating and sitting next to a fireplace with a warm drink, cozy sweater, and a good book”

Favorite holiday memory?

“Grandma’s House with everyone there/more food than we could eat”

“Bourbon (old fashioned or Manhattan)”

You’re bringing a dish to our holiday party. What are you bringing?

Pulled Ham

1 bone-in ham (not pre-sliced/spiral cut)

Dry Rub (a honey-based rub recommended)

Cherry Bourbon Glaze ingredients:

2 sticks of butter

1.5 cups of brown sugar

1 jar of cherry preserves

1.5 cups of orange juice (plus the zest of one whole orange)

0.5 cup of bourbon (Maker’s Mark is recommended)

Instructions

Part 1:

Initial Smoke Prep the ham: Score the surface of the bone-in ham. Rub a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the entire surface as a binder, then season generously with your chosen dry rub.

Smoke: Place the ham in a smoker set to 250°F (or 225°F as an alternative low-and-slow option). Insert a probe thermometer to monitor the internal temperature.

Cook time: Smoke the ham at this temperature for about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches approximately 160-170°F.

Part 2:

Glaze and Pulling Stage

Prepare the glaze: While the ham is smoking, combine all the glaze ingredients (butter, brown sugar, cherry preserves, orange juice, orange zest, and bourbon) in a saucepan and place it on the smoker (or stovetop) for about an hour to heat up and blend the flavors.

Increase heat: Once the ham hits the target temperature, increase the smoker temperature to 350°F.

Glaze and wrap: Place the ham in a foil pan with some of the glaze mixture (or apple juice/cider) to catch the drippings. Baste the ham with the warm glaze every 30 minutes.

Finish cooking: Continue cooking until the ham is “probe tender” and the internal temperature reaches 200-205°F.

Rest and pull: Let the ham rest, covered, for 30-60 minutes before pulling it apart with forks or hands. Toss with the pan drippings and extra glaze. For an oven-baked version, you can follow the same steps, simply using your oven instead of a smoker.”
