Meet Tom!

Executive Director

Since stepping into the executive director role this spring, my favorite part—hands down—has been getting reintroduced to Bismarck-Mandan. I’ve had the chance to sit down with city and county leaders, meet passionate creators in our studio, and hear from longtime DMA supporters who care deeply about public access. It’s reminded me just how vital this work is—and how many people believe in it.

In July, we celebrated 38 years! Dakota Media Access—originally known as CAT, Inc.—was officially incorporated on July 28, 1987. A year or so later, at the urging of my parents, I walked into the office next to the Tom Baker Meeting Room and offered to volunteer under then–Executive Director Jeff Olson. I was in high school and had developed an interest in journalism and storytelling.

I ran programs in the evening from 5 to 9 and operated cameras during city commission meetings (Marlan “Hawk” Haakenson was mayor at the time). I remember packing up bulky gear, recording concerts and performances around town, and even helping interview Virgil Hill. I also worked with the man who would become the third executive director of DMA—Guy Rittel. Those experiences shaped my passion for broadcasting and planted seeds for community service.

A lot has changed since then—especially in terms of technology—but our mission and vision remain much the same. DMA is here to make sure everyone has a voice and a place to be heard. Whether we’re broadcasting a city commission meeting, helping a local nonprofit share its story, or giving a first-time podcaster the tools to get started, our work is about connection, transparency, and trust.

And now, we’re building on that foundation.

Over the past few months, we’ve been welcoming new content creators. We’re working to create original shows and podcasts that capture a snapshot of Bismarck-Mandan—everything from public safety and the arts to news, sports, and community storytelling. Behind the scenes, we’re also working hard to stabilize funding, strengthen partnerships, and plan for the future as cable franchise fees continue to decline.

This is a moment of both challenge and opportunity—and I truly believe we’re ready for it. DMA is led by a dedicated, talented staff: Holly, Phil, Tammy, Quinn, Justin, Jaxon, Matt, and Tinashe! On top of everything they do, our team takes incredible pride in broadcasting over 300 government meetings live each year! None of our success happens without them.

I also want to take a moment to thank Mary Van Sickle, who led Dakota Media Access for 25 years with heart, vision, and determination. Mary laid the groundwork for what we’re building on today, and I’m incredibly grateful for her support during this transition.

We’re leaning in, trying new things, and finding ways to better serve the public in every corner of Bismarck and Mandan. If we haven’t connected yet, I hope we will soon.

Let’s keep building together.

Warmly,
Tom Gerhardt
Executive Director, Dakota Media Access
